Life Members/Retired Physicians Group

    The Life Members/Retired Physicians Group meets for a monthly talk and luncheon, usually the second Tuesday of the month, from March thru November, in the lounge at the Academy. The talks are free and  focus on updates in medicine, summaries of current medical topics, and a variety of other topics of general interest. Retired physicians, practicing physicians and guests are invited to attend the meetings.

    The presentations are usually Tuesdays and begin at 11:00 a.m. and usually last about an hour, including a 10 to 15 minute period for questions and discussion. After the program, members mingle in the lounge for a short time while enjoying wine and soft drinks and then those who have paid for a reservation adjourn to the dining room for a luncheon. Speakers are invited to participate in the social hour and the luncheon. Attendance ranges between 30 to 45. Meeting notices are mailed monthly. For more information or to be added to the mailing list, call the Academy office (585) 271-1313.

Dr. William J. Hall is a nationally recognized expert in Geriatric Medicine. He has held many major positions including Chairman, Department of Medicine at Rochester General Hospital, 1983-1992 and President of the American College of Physicians, 2001-2002. His numerous honors and awards include the Keith Ford Award for Excellence in teaching, University of Rochester in 2003. A prolific author, Dr. Hall has published 121 articles and currently serves as a member of the National Board of Directors of the American Geriatric Society.

Under her leadership, the Council partnered with High Falls Brewing Company in the Horses on Parade and with the Visitors Association on the Coldrush Tourist Promotion. Robert E. Heinig, M.D.

"Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Old Concept (of Dr. Charles B.F. Gibbs) Now a New Modern Therapy"

Dr. Robert E. Heinig is Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School and Head of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Unit of Rochester General Hospital. Dr. Heinig has received numerous honors and awards including the Alpha Omega Alpha Award from the University of Oregon Medical School, where he obtained his medical degree. He is also an active member of many professional societies, including the American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society, the American Society of Nephrology, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. His current research interests include genetic and disease-related hyperlipidemia and normocholesterolemic dyslipidemia in insulin resistant patients predisposing to coronary heart disease.

"Conducting, Arranging, Composing and Performing – What Does it Take to Make it?"

Jeff Tyzik has earned a reputation as one of America's most innovative pops conductors. Described by the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle as "among the best pops conductors in America." Tyzik is recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages. Principal Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for over a decade, he also serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Vancouver and Oregon Symphony Orchestras. As an accomplished composer and arranger, Tyzik has had his compositions recorded by ensembles including the London Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Summit Brass, and his arrangements have been recorded by groups including Erich Kunzel and the

Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the RPO, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Doc Severinsen with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He has also produced and composed theme music for many of the major television networks, including ABC, NBC, HBO and Cinemax and released six of his own albums on Capital, Polygram and Amherst Records.

Dr. Richard L. Fisher is Samuel E. Durand Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School and Director of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center from 2001 until the present. Previously at Loyola University Stirtch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois, he was Director of the Oncology Institute from 1984-1994 and Director of the Cardinal Bernstein Cancer Center from 1996-2001. He is a member of numerous National and International Committees in the field of Oncology. Also, he is recognized nationally and internationally as a Visiting Professor, Lecturer, Researcher and author of numerous scientific articles.

Robotic Surgery was first allowed in the United States in year 2000 and has shown steady growth, especially in the larger medical centers. She had "retired" from the Center for Governmental Research after a long and distinguished career, the last 12 years as President and CEO. The CGR was formed by George Eastman to do non-partisan research into public policy, CGR flourished and grew with State and National recognition under her leadership. In January she was selected as the winner of the Athena Award from a field of 20 finalists (we invited her before she won) She has a reputation for speaking up and speaking out.

"Reflections on a Life-Long Professional Career at URMC"

In September 2005, the Department of Cardiology held a "Feldschrift" (we had to look it up) for distinguished colleagues, past and present, to honor Dr. Cohen in retirement. After 13 years on the Cardiology faculty, he served 6 years as Physician-in-Chief at Rochester General Hospital. Then came 15 years as Associate Dean for Medical Education where, working with others, the education of medical students, Residents and Fellows was his passion. He returned to Cardiology to continue his unique skills in teaching and mentoring. After more than 40 years at URMC, his white coat is still handy.

"It shouldn't hurt to be old: Elder Abuse, An Alarming Public Health Issue"

Dr. Bomba practiced medicine (primarily geriatrics) for many years before assuming her present position. She is highly regarded in her specialty and is considered to a medical expert on Elder Abuse. Elder Abuse is considered by experts to be a hidden epidemic. It is associated with increased mortality rates for vulnerable older adults. Framing elder abuse as a geriatric syndrome offers an approach to the challenging problem for practitioners and older adults alike. In her presentation, Dr. Bomba extends a call for social advocacy to ensure, "It shouldn't hurt to be old."

Invariably he is trusted by all sides because of his reputation for honesty, integrity and fairness. Judge Telesca played a vital role in bringing groups together for discussions about Genesee Hospital.

Mr. Lasser is a born teacher exemplified by his thirty-two year career teaching English at the Harley School. This teaching career provided him with the roof and bread and butter to allow pursuit of other interests. He was a Theater Critic for the Gannett Newspapers for twenty years. In 1980 he began a weekly hour-long PBS FM radio program which achieved National Syndication on over 100 stations and won a 1994 Peabody award. The program features American popular music , with an emphasis on the 1900 - 1950 era. He takes 20 to  30 trips a year around the country, primarily to museums, to make presentations combining history and music. You'll hear one of those presentations today.

Tech and dental structures so often survive when all else is destroyed and can be used for making identification and solving crimes. The presentation will illustrate actual cases and provide a sampling of the variety of interesting challenges encountered. The speaker is a nationally and internationally known authority in the field.
